SpaceX's powerful Falcon Heavy rocket will send NASA's Psyche asteroid mission skyward today, Oct. 12, 2023, at 10:16 a.m. EDT (14:16 UTC) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Psyche mission is a first-of-its-kind mission to explore a metal-rich asteroid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
The Psyche spacecraft is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A. The launch window extends through Oct. 16.
The Psyche spacecraft will spend about four years traveling to the asteroid Psyche, which is about the size of Massachusetts. Psyche is a metallic asteroid, which means it is primarily composed of iron and nickel. Scientists believe Psyche may be the core of a planet that never fully formed.
The Psyche spacecraft will orbit Psyche for about two years, studying the asteroid's surface composition and magnetic field. The spacecraft will also study Psyche's gravity field and its interior structure.
The Psyche mission is expected to provide new insights into the formation of planets and the evolution of the solar system.
